Youth Needs
When youth lack stability, their path to independence becomes uncertain.
What is youth instability?
Challenges Facing Young Adults
In Cook County, youth aged 18–24 make up 12.4% of the homeless population—highlighting a critical and often overlooked need within our community.
For young adults, instability is about more than housing. It often disrupts relationships with parents or caregivers, leaving them without consistent support, guidance, or a clear path forward. Many experience isolation and uncertainty, unsure of where to turn or how to access help.
Without stability, it becomes difficult to plan for the future. Youth facing these challenges are more likely to struggle to continue their education, maintain employment, and build the foundation for independence.
These circumstances are often compounded by additional barriers.
Many young people experiencing homelessness are navigating complex situations such as involvement in the foster care or justice systems, domestic violence, or early parenthood. Others face heightened risks related to mental health, substance use, and personal safety.
OUR IMPACT
Supporting Stability During a Critical Stage of Life
As the number of unaccompanied youth continues to grow, Northwest Compass is expanding services to meet this urgent need. Through our youth housing programs, we provide safe, stable living environments paired with individualized, trauma-informed support.
Each young adult receives one-on-one case management and access to wraparound services tailored to their unique circumstances—helping them build life skills, pursue education or employment, and move toward long-term independence.
Stability during this stage of life is critical.
With the right support, young adults can regain direction, rebuild confidence, and establish a foundation for a more secure future.
